self-portrait (2021), 120 film

Hi! My name is Maya. I am originally from northern New Jersey and am currently based in Brooklyn, where I work at the arts and culture publication Hyperallergic.

My reporting experience includes stories about how contaminated sacred Indigenous objects stored in museum collections affect repatriation efforts; the impact of Sudan’s civil war on the country’s cultural sector and how the country’s artists continue to make work amid displacement; protest actions at cultural institutions and artistic demonstrations for Palestine amid the Israeli military’s ongoing assault of the region; cases of artistic censorship; and other arts and culture matters intersecting with labor issues, the environment and climate activism, and other topics. I have also worked on projects dealing with issues such as the institutional barriers still overwhelmingly inhibiting access to medically-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder; no-fault evictions impacting the housing stability of residents in rapidly-gentrifying Boston neighborhoods; and the uncertain futures of New England coastal communities in the face of rising sea levels.

I acknowledge that I am situated on the unceded homelands of the Canarsie and Munsee Lenape nations, and grew up on the unceded homelands of the Schaghticoke, Munsee Lenape, and Mohican nations. I recognize that this land and its people are timeless and I pay respect to this history. I advocate for the autonomy of these Sovereign Nations and communities, which still thrive here as we continue to occupy their lands.
